We get it, you’d rather have Amazon send you a fresh bag of coffee, within a matter of days, especially those of you with Prime. However, if you are looking for the best coffee, it’s not on Amazon. Hey, just being honest here.

Most coffee at Amazon is old and has been sitting on a shelf just collecting dust.

Rather than buying stale coffee, you should go directly to the brand’s website. This will ensure that you are buying the best coffee possible that is both fresh and affordable. Did we mention that you’ll also save money if you skip Amazon and go directly to the brand’s website? We have gone ahead and included the best coffee brands below, including any promo codes or discounts we know of.

1. Black Ink Coffee Company

The best coffee on Amazon is Black Ink Coffee hands down, bar none, period. Coming in at the number one spot, Black Ink Coffee Company features the best coffee beans we have ever tried. Surprisingly, they can be found on Amazon but they ship directly from their roastery or café, so the coffee is fresh!

Honestly, we have tried just about every coffee that they had to offer, and it is all quite amazing, especially the Maineiac Blend. Black Ink Coffee Company is a veteran owned and operated coffee company that was founded by Parker Russell, a veteran in the military.

The brand is toted as a lifestyle brand with a pretty powerful ethos that the team at Black Ink tries to emulate, following your dreams. It is their ambition and goal to fuel your dreams through coffee and that is exactly what drinking their coffee can help you achieve. Each bag has the word “begin.” printed along the top as it is a simple reminder to go after whatever it is that you dream of doing, day or night.

What We Love About Black Ink Coffee

  • Each bag of coffee is guaranteed fresh as they roast to order, meaning that your coffee will get to you within a few days of being roasted.
  • Smooth taste profiles that have been carefully crafted to allow all types of coffee drinkers a pleasurable experience.
  • Slow roasted in small batches prevents charring and burning which is why you’ll never taste burnt coffee at Black Ink.
  • Various coffee choices ranging from Single Origins to Blends, as well as coffee certifications like Fair Trade and Organic coffee. They even offer a wholesale coffee program.
  • Save money and sign up for a subscription so you can receive automatic shipments to your mailbox.

Quality – All coffee is specialty grade meaning that it tastes better and is healthier for you to consume.

Taste – Being a smaller roastery has allowed the company to focus on producing a great product. Starting small and growing slow is part of their mission to ensure the best coffee possible.

Branding – Most coffee brands are nothing more than a company that roasts coffee. At Black Ink, the community is a family. One that is brave, bold and relentless in their mission to follow their bliss.

None – Prove us wrong.

2. Peet’s Coffee

Major Dickason’s Blend Dark Roast

Peet's CoffeePeet’s Coffee

Coming in at number two on our list is Peet’s Coffee. More specifically, their iconic Major Dickason’s Blend which is a rich and flavorful option that Peet’s offers. According to most, it is their best tasting coffee and we tend to agree.

Unlike some of the other options mentioned later on, their dark roast is carefully roasted and never bitter. When factoring in taste and price, there is no better option. Well, besides our number one choice above.

When you think of Peet’s coffee, what comes to mind? For some, it may be the coffee on the shelf at the grocery store that is a bit more expensive than the cheap alternatives. For others, it may be the first coffee that you tried as you began the change from gross coffee, to better tasting coffee.

As Peet’s is typically the best coffee at the grocery store, it is no doubt that we would have it rated so high on our list. For us, when we think of Peet’s, the name Starbucks comes to mind.

In case you didn’t know, the guy that started Starbucks also started Peet’s. He actually left Starbucks to focus on Peet’s well before they were the size they are today. As Starbucks never left the second wave coffee movement, Peet’s has been versatile, catering to the third wave coffee movement with their specialty, small batch blends and Single Origins.

Roast Date – The fact that Peet’s coffee has a roast date will give you the confidence that they are providing a great product, simply due to their transparency. Maybe it hurts their sales in some ways (grocery stores), but at least they are honest!

Rich, Flavorful, Smooth – I can’t get over how delicious this coffee blend is. Most large scale coffee businesses tend to burn their dark roasts – cough, Starbucks. Peet’s not only masters the craft of a dark roast, but it is also rich and flavorful.

Flavor Nuances – Peet’s roasts their coffee in a way that allows for coffee professionals to pick up on subtle flavor nuances that are inherent with the Single Origin Beans.

Freshness – As we mentioned, their bags of coffee feature a roast date and are much fresher than most, but they are still quite aged when compared to a smaller batch roaster like Black Ink Coffee Company.

3. Stumptown Coffee

Stumptown Hair Bender Medium Roast

Stumptown Coffee Roasters Hair Bender BlendAt number three on our list is Stumptown Coffee Roasters and their iconic Hair Bender Blend. Stumptown is also actually owned by Peet’s Coffee, so it is no surprise that it has a similar rating as that of Peet’s. What makes Stumptown stand out is that it caters primarily to the third wave coffee movement, more specifically, specialty coffee.

No, their coffee isn’t priced so much higher than others because they are jerks, it is because they are using much higher quality coffee beans that also taste better, according to most. As a fellow coffee snob, it’s easy to see that the quality is top notch. Not only do they offer some of the best Amazon coffee, they also offer some of the best coffee in the world!

The Hair Bender Blend is no different as it is their clear winner and most sold blend of coffee beans that they offer. The description that they give is that it features a blend of Indonesian (Sumatran), Latin American and African (Ethiopian/Kenyan) coffee. This gives the blend a powerful and rich taste that features flavor notes of citrus and dark chocolate.

Not only are their coffee beans amazing, it is also sustainably sourced and reasonably priced for what you get. That is why we have placed Stumptown and their signature Hair Bender Blend at number three on our top ten list for the best amazon coffee.

Roast Date – Similar to Peet’s, each bag has a roast date and a best by date. This lets the consumer know just how old or fresh the coffee is which is important for customers to know. This honesty speaks to their straightforwardness as a coffee brand.

Specialty Coffee – Between the wonderful Single Origins they offer and meticulously crafted blends, Stumptown Coffee is the epitome of what Third Wave coffee should taste like!

Flavor Nuances – With such specialty coffee comes great power. NO, not that kind of power, we are referring to taste power. This third wave coffee features distinct flavor notes brought out by some excellent sourced specialty coffee beans.

Price – Yes, the coffee is great. However, it is similar quality as some other specialty coffee roasters, such as Black Ink Coffee, but priced a little higher. We understand that Organic coffee comes with a price tag, but come on!

4. Kicking Horse Coffee

454 Horse Power Dark Roast

Kicking Horse Coffee 454 Horse Power Dark RoastKicking Horse Coffee is Canada’s best kept secret. Well, it was. Now, they are roasting millions of pounds of coffee and distributing them all around the world. Their website doesn’t have an eCommerce section for buying coffee, which we find quite interesting.

Rather than building out their own sales funnel, they lead their customers to places where they can purchase the coffee with ease, such as Amazon and most grocery chains. Honestly, there simple statement of Wake Up & Kick Ass is perfect for capturing a larger portion of the coffee shares in America. For now, they seem quite content with providing specialty coffee as a wholesale distributor, but don’t be surprised if they surpass Starbucks some day.

With so many great coffee offerings, each with it’s own awesome name, we figured that we would discuss the 454 Horse Power Dark Roast Blend which is one of the best selling blends they have. This dark roast is smooth, heavy bodied and a great all day choice.

Unlike some, their approach to a dark roast is careful, meaning that the beans are not scorched or burnt. This helps bring out the subtle earthy and fruity flavor nuances that are buried deep within it’s Indonesian, Central and South American roots. Did we mention that their coffee is 100% Arabica coffee, shade grown, Fairtrade and Organic coffee certified? Well it is and it tastes lovely!

Branding – Kicking Horse Coffee has such a simple, yet powerful message… Wake Up & Kick Ass! They aren’t too active on social media, but they have built quite a nice community of motivated butt kickers!

Rich & Smooth – Kicking Horse carefully roasts their coffee in a way that prevents bitterness.

Flavor Nuances – People Often forget that Kicking Horse Coffee is in the specialty coffee niche. They source high quality coffee that are rich in flavor nuances that can even be found darker roasts.

No eCommerce Website – Amazon is a monopoly and was built on the foundation of affiliate marketers pushing sales their way. Honestly, we shouldn’t have to shop at large online warehouses for some “fresh” coffee. Instead, Kicking Horse needs a kick in the… and needs to start their own eCommerce salesfront.

Old Coffee – With such a large distribution of whole bean coffee throughout the world in various warehouses and grocery stores, it is difficult to keep track of how fresh the coffee is. Without a roast date, most of the coffee you are drinking is quite old. Even if nitro sealed, the coffee still runs the risk of oxidization and spoiling.

5. Bulletproof Coffee

Best Keto Coffee Blend

Bulletproof Coffee The Original Ground CoffeeBulletproof was one of the first brands to go to market with the keto diet lifestyle in mind. If you are looking for the best keto coffee, their is no better brand of coffee than that of Bulletproof. Not only do they offer sustainable sourced coffee but they also feature a wide array of keto products and recipes on their website.

Not to mention the fact that their coffee blends go great with any additive product you wish to put in your coffee to make it keto friendly. Like butter or MCT oils. For this reason, along with being an organic coffee, we have put Bulletproof at the number five spot on our list.

With such a great product, you may be wondering why they aren’t even higher up on the list. The answer is simple, the coffee is only average for the price. Yes, it tastes great, but in terms of the overall quality and bang for your buck, it is mediocre coffee at best. Perhaps it deserves to be considered a top Amazon contender, but only because of that it represents.

Like we mentioned, Bulletproof has built a community of like-minded individuals as well as a large database of keto recipes and tips. So if keto is important, you should probably stick with Bulletproof as it is a great brand for you to buy from. It should also be noted that in addition to the sustainable lifestyle, Bulletproof has a purity process that has helped them put forward coffee beans that have been tested to be safe and keto friendly.

Purity Process – According to Bulletproof, the coffee beans are carefully roasted to maintain their integrity and flavor. Then, the finished roasts are lab to verify that the beans are that of the Bulletproof purity levels. A lot of people don’t know this, but drinking coffee with impurities can actually lead to chronic health issues.

Sustainable Coffee – Bulletproof coffee takes great pride in sourcing coffee that is special. With this comes the Organic coffee certification and Fair-trade stamp of approval. Also, most of the coffee comes from high elevated, shade grown and small independent farms to ensure the highest quality possible.

Lifestyle – Nobody has built a better brand image around the keto diet than that of Bulletproof with their signature bulletproof coffee.

Average Coffee for Higher Price – Although the price is right compared to most, the quality of the coffee is that of your average wholesale coffee supplier, like Kicking Horse and Peet’s Coffee. For that reason, the price is a little on the steeper side.

Keto Only – Not everyone practices the keto diet. That is why it is difficult to recommend this brand to people that are less concerned with their macro levels, and more concerned with the overall quality of the coffee. If you aren’t practicing keto, you may want to consider a brand like Black Ink Coffee instead.

6. Death Wish Coffee

The Worlds Strongest Coffee Dark Roast

Deathwish CoffeeDeath Wish Coffee is one of those brands that became popular by claiming they have the worlds strongest coffee. In reality, they are more popular because of their branding which features tattoos, explicit language and awesome coffee imagery. Coming in at number six on our list is Death Wish Coffee’s Original Blend.

With most highly caffeinated coffee, it is usually quite bitter as it’ll often consist of a portion of Robusta beans. These Robusta beans are not only highly caffeinated, but they are also resilient to the environment and diseases. As for Death Wish, they have somehow created a highly caffeinated blend of coffee with 100% Arabica Beans.

As far as we are concerned, this is the best tasting blend of coffee with high concentrations of caffeine. Also, Death Wish is USDA Organic and Fairtrade certified if sustainable and organic coffee that is important to you. Although it isn’t our favorite, we certainly feel as though these coffee beans belong on the list.

High Caffeine – The caffeine for those of you that need it to get through the day! We know that many of you determine what’s the best based on the caffeine content.

Strong Rich Flavor – The Death Wish Coffee Original Blend is a great choice for a dark roast blend that has the strength that many associate with a darker roasted coffee.

Attitude – Death Wish Coffee has just as much attitude as their branding, in a good way.

Taste – When comparing this blend with others on our list, it comes up quite short in the taste department. However, if caffeine is what you are looking for, look no further!

Low Caffeine – It turns out that there are many other coffee brands out there with higher caffeinated coffee. As we mentioned, without the use of Robusta beans, one blend of coffee can only feature so much caffeine with only Arabica beans.

Price – There is no reason why their coffee should cost a small fortune for the end customer, it’s average sourced coffee beans… nothing more.

7. Black Rifle Coffee

Blackbeard’s Delight Dark Roast

Black Rifle CoffeeWe have a love/hate relationship with Black Rifle Coffee Company. On one hand, we love that they are veteran owned, put out hilarious content and give back to the Law Enforcement and Military community. What’s not to love about Mat Best and Evan Hafer?

On the other hand, they are venturing down a path we do not want to take, sort of like when Anakin went to the dark side. What we mean by this is the literal dark side. As in, their coffee is getting darker and darker. Often times, the coffee we have tested is quite scorched and burnt, a typical roasting imperfection of a darker roast that stay in the roaster for too long.

Additionally, it appears that Black Rifle is more focused on building a brand instead of focusing their efforts inwards on their own coffee quality. What we mean by this is that they are sourcing cheap quality coffee. Again, the dark side.

Maybe they are still trying to figure things out with such a recent exponential growth. Between ad costs to stay at the top, scaling issues and many of the other bottlenecks that a larger corporation faces, they may just be cutting costs for now while they figure it out. Maybe not, but that is just our wishful thinking.

For now, the coffee has been decreasing in quality and taste. Yes, we put them on our list as a brand with the best coffee on Amazon, but even the coffee isn’t staying fresh at Amazon anymore as it sits there and oxidizes over time on the shelves. Don’t be surprised if they get removed from our list all together when we test again. If the branding wasn’t so incredible, Black Rifle would not be on our list.

Branding – Black Rifle has captured the country by storm with their branding. Between the guns, models and crazy coffee shenanigans, how could you not be excited watching their content, let alone being part of their community.

Branding – Did we mention their branding already? Oh well, here it is again. We love seeing epic videos of guns and babes. Yeah, most of them don’t even have a cup of coffee in it, but it’s fun to see a coffee company create videos as if Michael Bay and Hugh Hefner came together to make a brand.

Veteran Owned – Whether or not we like the coffee, their is no denying the fact that they are veteran owned and give back a lot to the veteran population. Including their mission of hiring 10,000 veterans. Take that, Starbucks!

Cost – Not only is the coffee lesser quality, it is overpriced. Even some of the specialty quality coffee on our list is priced more affordably than theirs.

Burnt – There is a 50% chance that the coffee you will receive will be burnt, with the other 50% chance that you’ll find a shell casing in the bag. No, not really but their coffee has gotten more and more ridden with roasting imperfections that I feel bad using it in my garden as fertilizer.

Branding – With the pro gun and pro military branding that this Conservative brand has embodied, it is difficult for people to support that are on the other spectrum, such as a certain brand listed at number nine.

8. Lavazza Coffee

Best Espresso Blend

Lavazza Super Crema Whole Bean BlendLavazza Coffee has quickly become a staple in most households. Especially for those that enjoy the convenience of a single serve coffee pod or espresso shot, while also still maintaining the rich, bold and smoky aftertaste of a good dark roast. When searching for the best Amazon coffee, you’ll usually come across Lavazza and their French roast whole bean coffee choices.

Whether they are paying more money for ads or that a lot of people are just searching for them, one thing is true, they sell a lot of coffee! We don’t have all too much to say about Lavazza, other than the fact that their Lavazza Coffee makes a great espresso. Unfortunately, the coffee tastes quite poorly when extracted as a pour over, French press, or in a drip coffee machine.

If it wasn’t for the fact that Lavazza’s Super Crema wasn’t able to give off a decent amount of crema, we probably wouldn’t have included them on our list. Also, it should be noted that other coffee companies on this list, that were previously mentioned, put out an espresso blend that is just as good, if not better. Sorry Lavazza.

Crema – Like we mentioned, Lavazza has a Super Crema whole bean coffee blend that is optimized for pulling shots of espresso. This allows for espresso aficionados to prepare their own espresso based beverages at home, such as a latte, with loads of crema within.

Cost – Unfortunately, you can find high quality espresso blends sold by many other coffee brands. Not only are they just as good, but they are much cheaper. For the uneducated coffee addicts that are not well versed in the coffee world, they may not know that marketing a blend as an “espresso blend” is usually only a ploy to drive sales.

Taste – The Super Crema espresso coffee that we tested came from Amazon and it tasted quite old, even if you try to buy their whole bean coffee. There was no roast date marked on the bag and it certainly didn’t taste well as a pour over. Perhaps some of their other blends hold up better when extracted in various ways, but not the Super Crema blend. Their French roast was also a bit bitter, even for a cold brew or French press.

9. Starbucks Coffee

Pike Place Roast Medium Roast

Starbucks Pike Place Roast Medium RoastAt number 9, we have Starbucks and their popular arabica beans coming in with an average score of a 3.7 out of 5. Starbucks is a coffee brand that has done exceptionally well for themselves. I am not sure if you are familiar with their story, but it is quite an interesting journey that they have taken to get to the top. Today, they are a coffee monopoly, as they make up 40% of the entire coffee shop market.

For this review, we have taken a look at one of their best selling coffee blends, the Pike Place Roast. This well rounded roast comes from coffee beans that are uniquely owned by Starbucks. Yes, you read that correctly. Starbucks has done so well that they actually own the coffee farms that they source from.

The Pike Place Roast is defined by the flavor notes of toasted almonds and chocolate. It produces a smooth and well balanced cup of coffee that is quite enjoyable if you can prepare it yourself. Most Starbucks blends are a bit bitter as they are typically roasted in a way that burns and scorches the beans, but not the Pike Place Roast. Try their whole bean coffee blend rather than the pre-ground junk!

  • Cost – Since Starbucks has done so well and actually owns their own coffee farms that they source from, it allows for them to sell their bags of coffee for quite a low price. This is a great option for those of you on a tight budget.
  • Strong – For those of you that consider coffee “Strength” to be the darker, slightly bitter taste you get, then this blend is very strong!
  • Crema – Although the Pike Place Roast is not specifically marketed as an espresso blend, it acts quite nicely as one. Even at an older age, this blend of coffee is packed fully of rich crema if you are someone that makes shots of espresso at home.

  • Burnt – With the first and second generation of coffee drinkers in mind, Starbucks has consistently put out a product that is over roasted. This burnt and bitter taste that many people may prefer is actually a roasting defect and we have no idea why Starbucks would do such a disservice to perfectly good beans!
  • Taste – Naturally with an over roasted bag of burnt coffee beans, you’ll get very little flavor and taste. This is the case with Starbucks, zero taste! Even if you buy their whole bean coffee, it’ll still taste quite flat.

You may know Starbucks for their dark, burnt coffee, but they actually have a much lighter coffee. The blonde roast, or white coffee, is their take on the light roast. If you don’t like dark roast, consider giving their blond roast coffee a try!

10. Dunkin’ Donuts Coffee

Original Blend Medium Roast

Dunkin Donuts Original Blend Medium RoastIf you are from Massachusetts, or New England, chances are that you are already sucking down a large iced coffee while watching the Red Sox. If you fit into this category, you may not want to proceed any further. Coming in at number 10 on our list is Dunkin’ Donuts.

With an overall rating of a 3.5 out of 5, the Dunkin’ Donuts Original Roast Medium Blend is a mediocre choice at best. The Dunkin’ Donuts Original Blend is a medium roast blend of whole bean coffee that has a distinct taste that many Americans have grown to love and recognize.

Whether it is the nostalgia that the taste brings to many, or the acquired taste that people have grown to like out of repetition, the Original Blend is only average. The average coffee drinker will agree with this, but if they live and breathe New England coffee!

Dunkin’ Donuts isn’t all that far away from Starbucks in terms of the total market share in the US. With thousands of locations around the US, it is no surprise that the coffee is only average. With the goal of supplying a consistent taste, there naturally is less of a concern for quality.

When you become a top dog like they have, you need to spend more money on marketing to remain at the top. Unfortunately, as much as we love hearing people refer to Dunkin’ Donuts as “dunks”, this brand of coffee is very far from a slam “dunk”. New England coffee is sacred though, so be careful when talking with a customer of Dunkin’ Donuts.

  • Cheap – Dunkin’ Donuts is priced lower than most on our list. Perhaps that is why their medium dark roast coffee is so popular among the average Bostonian coffee drinker.
  • Consistent – A taste that most will recognize right away. For many, it tastes like summer cold brew. For others, it tastes like a perfect cup of coffee before a Sox game.
  • Charity – It is well known that Dunkin’ Donuts gives a lot of money to various charities in the US. The medium dark roast we mentioned above may not be the best, but what is better than charity?

  • Cheap Quality – Dunkin’ Donuts doesn’t price their coffee at such a low price because they are nice, it’s because they are buying cheaper quality arabica beans.
  • Grassy Flavor – Most experienced roasters will tell you the same thing, Dunkin’ Donuts under-roasts and under-develops their coffee. As a result, their coffee is often rich with imperfections of a poor under-roasted batch of coffee. Hence the grassy flavor. Does the average coffee drinker or customer notice, probably not.

Summary: The Amazon Coffee Snob

It should be noted that taste is subjective, everyone has their own unique preferences and that is what we love about coffee. Don’t let our rankings change your opinions, if you like something and have compared it with other coffees, stick with what you love.

However, if you are new to the coffee world, don’t know too much regarding coffee quality, or if you have never tried some of the coffee brands from our list, we hope that you found some good coffee to try. Obviously if you haven’t tried Black Ink Coffee, that should be your first stop!
